Collectors Guide: The Pick of the Royal Mint’s 2026 Releases

Solomon Global introduces The British Lion and American Eagle, the Gold Sovereign ‘Yellow Gold’ Coin, the Legendary Creatures Loch Ness Monster, the latest Tudor Beasts issue: ‘The Queen’s Lion’ and previews the 2026 British Lion Gold Bullion Coin.

The Royal Mint has been producing coins since 886 AD and today has the capacity to strike up to five billion each year. In addition to the United Kingdom’s circulating coins, it produces a wide range of collectables, including popular commemoratives celebrating figures as diverse as Dennis the Menace, Freddie Mercury, Mary Seacole, and Shakespeare. For investors and serious collectors, the Royal Mint also issues bullion coins, crafted from investment-grade precious metals and produced in carefully controlled quantities. The value of these coins is not solely driven by the gold price but also by scarcity and collector demand. At Solomon Global, we specialise in these premium investment-grade coins, offering collectors and investors the chance to acquire something that combines long-term wealth preservation with collector appeal.

Here, we look at some of the prime Royal Mint releases in 2026, which offer both investment potential and collectable significance. All the coins detailed below are exempt from both VAT and Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

Folklore, myths, and legendary creatures are particularly popular themes in numismatics, and there’s none so captivating and globally recognised as Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as Nessie.

Limited to just 5,000 coins worldwide, this 1oz gold coin features Dan Thorne's visualisation of the magnificent monster rising from the loch with the Scottish Highlands and the ruins of Urquhart Castle in the background. The obverse bears the official King Charles III portrait by Martin Jennings.

As the inaugural release in The Royal Mint's new Legendary Creatures series, Solomon Global expects it will prove to be very popular.

The British Lion and American Eagle 2026 1oz Gold Bullion Coin

Celebrating the strong relationship and enduring alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States and born from a collaboration with former US Mint Chief Engraver John M. Mercanti, this coin unites the emblematic British Lion and American Eagle.

This is the third occasion that these iconic creatures have been combined on a British coin. However, the depictions differ significantly from previous incarnations. Crafted in 999.9 fine gold, the reverse of the 2026 issue is designed by Jonathan Olliffe, whilst the obverse features the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. This is a striking commemoration as well as a sound addition to a precious metals portfolio.

These coins are highly liquid with a low premium over the gold spot price.

Gold Sovereign ‘Yellow Gold’ Coin 2026

The Sovereign is The Royal Mint’s flagship coin. Boasting over 500 years of history, it is known as the ‘chief coin of the world.’ These timeless, instantly recognisable, and highly liquid assets are extremely sought after yet have low mintage. The 2026 release maintains all the heritage associated with sovereigns, but this latest edition introduces some distinctive changes. In a return to its roots, the 2026 1oz Sovereign is composed of the traditional and popular yellow gold alloy used from 1817 to 1999, as opposed to the rose gold that has been used from 2000 to 2025.

New anti-counterfeiting features have been introduced, making the Sovereign of 2026 one of the most secure bullion coins in the world. In addition to the microtext on the reverse, which reads 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' (the Order of the Garter motto), the coin also features a hologram-like image, which changes appearance when viewed from different angles. Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon design appears on the coin’s reverse, and Martin Jennings’ uncrowned portrait of King Charles III is on the obverse.

Tudor Beast ‘The Queen’s Lion’ 1oz Gold Coin

The Royal Tudor Beasts collection, created in partnership with experts at Historic Royal Palaces, was launched in October 2021. The Queen’s Lion marks the eighth release in the hugely popular series, which is expected to conclude in 2026.

The series is inspired by the ten majestic stone beasts that line the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace, which were installed to signify the strength of the Tudor dynasty and represent the lineage of and union between Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. The reverse of the current issue, designed by collection artist David Lawrence, features the Queen’s Lion, holding a shield with Seymour’s badge. The official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, adorns the obverse.

There was extremely high demand amongst Solomon Global clients for the PCGS Certified 2025 Tudor Beast Greyhound of Richmond 1oz Gold Coin, which was the seventh in the series.

Coming soon, the British Lion Gold Bullion 1oz Gold Coin – 2026

The Royal Mint launched a brand-new, very low mintage bullion coin series in 2025 featuring the iconic heraldic lion (inscribed with 'Leo Britannicus') and a striking Union Flag surface animation. The second issue of the range is scheduled to be released this year, and just like with its predecessor, only 5,000 coins will be available worldwide.
